Three Ways to Recognize a Top-Notch Roofing Contractor
The art of properly installing shingles remains a mystery to many homeowners. That's because roofing is performed in a location that's difficult and, sometimes, dangerous to view. You can hear the roofers' hammers and nail guns, but, unless you venture onto your roof, you have to assume they performed the job correctly.
Professional Roofing Contractor Indicators
You may not be able to walk on your roof, but you can perform several ground-level inspections that are pretty good indicators that you have hired a reputable roofing contractor. You should expect these three things from reputable contractors:
- Cleanliness and neatness
- Up to date credentials, insurance, and references
- Use of proper materials
You can easily check all three of these items, and all reputable roofing contractors should pass with flying colors.
Cleanliness and Neatness
Your roofers should clean the job site daily and take away all loose shingles and wrappers. When your roofers are finished, your roof should be clean, with no loose debris, and the shingle overhangs on all edges should be trimmed neatly to about 1-1 1/2 inches.
Up to Date Credentials, Insurance, and References
Reputable roofing contractors should be able to show you their business and contractor's licenses and have proof their insurance is current. They should also be able to provide you with a list of satisfied previous customers.
Use of Proper Roofing Materials
A good roofing contractor should cover all sheathing on your roof with felt paper prior to installing shingles. He/she should properly flash all roof penetrations, and, if you live in an area prone to snow and ice, your contractor should use a special membrane along eaves and in valleys to help prevent leaks from ice damming. According to Conrad Neuf, a construction manager for 28 years who has supervised the construction of hundreds of homes, "most roof leaks are due to improper flashing at roof penetrations and ice damming." While not a requirement in many jurisdictions, properly applied drip edge can also prevent damage from water infiltration.
You may not be able to inspect the work of your roofing contractor close up, but, if your roofers get a passing grade in all three of these vital areas, you've most likely hired a good roofing contractor who will do a professional job.

Tips for Working with Roofers
Asphalt Shingle Roofing
Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material in North America
mainly because they are economical and versatile, work well on steep-sloped
roofs, are sunlight and weather resistant, require little-to-no maintenance and
are reasonably priced. In addition, asphalt shingles are also easy to cut,
fasten, and fit, as well as being compatible with many different kinds of
flashing and edging products.
