8 Tips to Find the Perfect Roofing Contractor

Time to replace that old roof? A reputable roofing contractor can get the job done! But how do you choose the best professional from the long list of roofing contractors in the local phone book? There are a few ways to narrow down the list of roofers who want your business.

Tips to Hiring a Roofing Contractor

Not sure where to begin in choosing a roofing contractor? These tips can help:

  • Ask for recommendations. Turn to neighbors, family, and friends in the area to get recommendations for great roofing companies. Roofers who are very good at their job will be mentioned again and again.
  • Check their history. How long has the company been in business? Are they licensed? Have any complaints been lodged with the Better Business Bureau? If so, how well were those complaints handled? A reputable company will have many years of experience behind them and very happy customers to prove it.
  • Do they have adequate insurance? Roofing contractors should always have ample insurance to cover any accidents that might occur while they are on your property.
  • What about warranties? The materials for your roof might be under extended warranty, but what about the work itself? Most roofing contractors offer at least a one-year warranty on their work.
  • Get at least three estimates. Don't go with the first contractor that looks good on paper. Get at least three estimates for comparison, and always be wary of very low or very high bids.
  • Call references. Ask for a list of references. Call each one and ask them about their experience. Make sure the references are actual customers, not friends or family members who are obligated to sing loud praises!
  • Talk about contracts and time tables. Study sample contracts and get a firm idea of the time table to complete the work. Once the work begins, it should be finished as quickly as possible.
  • Go with your instinct. If something about a roofing contractor just doesn't seem right, go with your gut and turn to another company. When it comes to choosing someone to handle the work for you, your comfort level means just as much as your bottom line.

Working with Roofers

When it's time for the job to begin, make a point of cleaning up the yard around the house, to give the workers plenty of space for ladders and supplies. Heed any special instructions the roofers might have for you, and then simply stay out of their way! This is what you hired them to do, so breathe a sigh of relief and turn the job over to your carefully-chosen roofing contractor.
