Clean Up Metal Roofs the Right Way

You've likely seen unsightly metal roofs in need of a good coat of paint. Rust and discoloration turn an otherwise beautiful steel roof into an eyesore.

For a metal roof in poor shape, the simple solution is to give it a coat of paint; however, it's not as simple as it sounds. Algae and rust are tough problems to beat.

Tips for Restoring a Metal Roof

These tips can help you successfully restore the appearance of your steel roof:

  • Prepare the metal roof Start with a good power-washing to take off much of the offending rust, old paint, and algae. Add bleach to the washing solution to defeat stubborn algae. Washing an old steel roof with household vinegar can fix some discoloration problems due to built-up algae and mildew. Spray on the vinegar and scrub with a stiff bristle brush.
  • Finish up with an acid wash After most of the rust and green is gone, wash the roof with trisodium phosphate or a similar acid wash product. If you need to make some repairs, like replacing a missing metal panel or straightening out a dented or curled piece, now is the time to do it.
  • Prime the roof Spot prime rusted areas with an acrylic-, shellac-, or solvent-based roof primer made for the purpose. Follow the package instructions carefully.
  • Paint the surface Painting steel roofs with a good metal roof paint isn't cheap but is well worth the expense. You can roll, brush, or spray it on. Two solid coats should be applied with ample drying time between them.
  • Don't rush any part of the process Let the roof dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Preparing, priming, and painting your steel roof can give your home a new lease on life.
