Are You Considering Steel Roofs?

Along with aluminum, steel roofs are the most common metal roofing options used by homeowners today. While steel is heavier than aluminum, it's less expensive to buy and install, and steel can be painted to match the design scheme of your home. Steel roofs have a single large drawback: they can be prone to rust. However, with routine maintenance, proper finish, and professional installation, they can last five to ten years before requiring repainting.

On the plus side, steel roofs can outlast more conventional roofing options and many come with some of the best material warranties among all roofing products. Often contractors sell a synthetic roofing underlayment that's installed between the sub-roof and the steel roof, offering rain protection many times stronger and lighter than the traditional roofing felt used with other roofing alternatives. While steel roofs may cost more than asphalt tile alternatives, they hold up better against wind, rain, and UV rays. And metal does not contain the environmentally harmful petrochemicals soaked into fibrous products.

Metal Roofs: Considerations to Mull Over Before Installing

Check with your home insurance company. Some insurers won't extend coverage on a new steel roof that's installed over the top of more than three layers of pre-existing shingles. If that's the case with your home, you'll have to remove the shingles before adding a steel roof. If you have less than three layers, you still may need to call in a contractor to hammer down the shingles for a tight fit.

One final thought: steel roofs often conduct the sound of heavy rain or hail into your living space. Even so, many homeowners love the sound.
