Is It Time to Install Solar Panels?
Living "green" and working to improve the environment have made the transition from being fads to becoming important parts of everyday life in this country and there are various ways you can get involved at home. Many families recycle on a regular basis while others are buying sustainable building products for home remodeling projects and irrigating their lawns with collected rain water. How about solar panels for your roof? You've heard a little bit about them over the years; is it time to talk to a roofing contractor to see if they're right for your home?
How Do Solar Panels Work on Your Roof?
Solar panels are made up of cell blocks which consist of solar cells. As sunlight hits the solar cells, some rays reflect off them and others pass through. But a little of the sunlight is absorbed and when combined with what other cells absorb, the solar power is converted by the system into electricity for the home. Most roof solar panel systems provide partial power for a home, but larger systems can provide all the electrical power a home requires. Of course a key ingredient for the system to work is sunlight, and if your home is in constant shade, a solar system may not be for you.
Should You Talk to Roofing Contractors about Solar Panels?
Roofers can install green roofing products, and some solar panel companies contract with local roofing contractors to install their panels. You should have roofers inspect the condition of your roof prior to solar panels being installed, as the panels must be removed and reinstalled if you need to replace your roof. If it is almost time for a new roof, it may be worth it to go ahead and do it now.
Does It Make Financial Sense to Install Solar Panels on My Roof?
The prices of solar panels are coming down and there is a federal tax credit that can cover up to 30% of the costs for a homeowner to install a solar panel energy system. Some states and localities also offer rebates for installing solar panels. In many cases the solar panel company or their roofing contractors can handle all the paperwork needed to qualify for the rebates and tax credits.
According to an article in the North Country Times of California, a family that spends about $250 a month on electricity can expect to pay off a typical system in about 8 years, but this may vary depending on where you live. Some utility companies are assisting consumers in their efforts to go "green" by helping them lease or purchase solar panel systems for their homes.
