Which brand of roofing shingles should I choose?
Q. What is the difference between Owens Corning Oakridge and CertainTeed Landmark shingles?--Foley, MN
A. Actually there isn't much difference between the two shingles--they both should be a good choice for your Minnesota home. There are a few more color options with CertainTeed's Landmark model line, but the 13 colors offered by Owens Corning's for their Oakridge shingles give you plenty to choose from, as well. Both manufacturers feature lighter colors in these model lines that have earned an Energy Star-rating and may help lower your cooling costs.
Warranties are also very similar with both shingles, having a 10-year, 100-percent warranty on manufacturer defects and leaks and a limited-lifetime warranty that continues after the 10 years is up for any leaks due to defects in the shingles. Each manufacturer offers a warranty on high wind damage up to gusts of 110 mph, and warranties up to 130 mph are available. Overall, I would say that both of these shingles can be an excellent choice. It may simply come down to your color preference and on which one you can get the better deal from your local distributor or roofing contractor.

Roofing vs. Reroofing
If you come to find out that your roof has been damaged and needs to be fixed then there are two main approaches you can take. You can either decide to make a roof repair or replace the entire roof. Roof repairs will generally save you time and money, but in most cases a new roof is the best option. As a general rule of thumb, if the existing roof on is only one layer and there are no problems with the roof deck, a new roof is not necessary.
