Roofing Question

How do I locate my roof leak?

Finding a roof leak can be difficult because where you see evidence of the leak is not always where it's coming into your home. If you suspect you have a roof leak, where you start your search can depend on where the moisture is located. An unfinished attic is a good place to start if you have a leak towards the center of your home. Take a look at the underside of your roof sheathing for any sign of water stains or daylight shining through. A suspicious spot on the underside of your sheathing should be checked on the roof. In many cases a leak in the center of the roof is caused by a problem with flashing or missing shingles.

A roof leak around the perimeter of your home is much tougher as there are so many sources it could be coming from; it may even be a siding or window leak. The easiest way to locate the leak is usually with a ladder and a garden hose set on gentle spray; start at a spot where you think it may be leaking and use the hose to duplicate rain falling. Gradually expand your spray area while an inside helper watches for dampness. A roof leak near the edge of your roof can be caused by ice damming, shingle issues or even a problem with your drip edge.

Once you locate a roof leak, you should contact a roofing contractor to do the repair. Working on a roof can be dangerous and a roofing contractor has the expertise to do the repair correctly the first time; they also have the experience to notice any other potential problems,

Roofing vs. Reroofing

If you come to find out that your roof has been damaged and needs to be fixed then there are two main approaches you can take. You can either decide to make a roof repair or replace the entire roof. Roof repairs will generally save you time and money, but in most cases a new roof is the best option. As a general rule of thumb, if the existing roof on is only one layer and there are no problems with the roof deck, a new roof is not necessary.
